King Yanluo

King Yanluo, known to the Chinese as 阎罗王, is the ruler of the underworld in Chinese mythology. This underworld consists of 10 courts where the deceased are judged for their conduct in life and 18 levels of hell where a myriad of torture methods are mete.

In this animated adaption, King Yanluo runs the underworld like a resort hotel, where the visitors check in for... eternity. His deranged record keeper is in charge of the book of births and deaths. Unfortunately he has trouble reading properly. Madam Mengpo brews the soup of forgetfulness for the souls just before they are reincarnated. Disastrously, she has a terrible memory herself, often forgetting which ingredients to use for her soup. The Jade Emperor is the benevolent but oblivious ruler of the heavens. Surrounded by spectacular lavishness, King Yanluo often feels jealous of the opulence that the Jade Emperor has.
